Zambia – A New Frontier for Investment Opportunities

On Wednesday 23rd February at the Shangri-La Hotel, Kuala Lumpar, Developing Markets Associates in conjunction with the High Commission of Zambia in Malaysia hosted the Malaysia-Zambia Investment Forum 2011.

The event was attended by some 150 delegates who were welcomed with opening remarks by HE Anderson Kaseba Chibwa, Zambian High Commissioner to Malaysia, Senator Datuk Donald Lim Siang Chai, Deputy Finance Minister for Malaysia and Baroness Lynda Chalker, Chairman, Africa Matters Limited (AML), amongst others.

Amongst a list of distinguished speakers, the conference was addressed by Dr Caleb Fundanga, Governor, Central Bank of Zambia; high-level representatives from the Governtment of Zambia such as Hon David Phiri, Deputy Minister of Finance and National Planning and Hon Mwendoi Akakandelwa, Deputy Minister of Energy; and representatives from the business community such as Tai Terk Lin, Group CEO, ICB Banking Group, Eugene Chungu, Corporate Affairs/Communications Manager, Lafarge and Alfred Lungu.

Session 1: Setting the Scene – New Economic Hub in Southern Africa Zambia is a land-linked country in the Southern Africa Sub-region, bordered by Tanzania (in the North), Malawi (in the East), Mozambique (in the South-East), Zimbabwe (in the South), Botswana and Namibia (in the South-West), Angola (in the West) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (in the North-West). Given its strategic location in the region, as well as a combination of strengths, including natural resources and political stability, it is an ideal investment location with connecting routes from the eastern to the western coast of Southern Africa.

Session 3: Energy & Mining
Zambia’s vast water resources and coal reserves offer abundant investment opportunities for hydroelectric power generation, supply and distribution. Opportunities for bio-fuel production and for the development of coal-fired power plants also exist. The Government also welcomes investment in the hydrocarbon exploration sector: indeed, whilst hydrocarbon (oil and gas) source rocks are proven and preserved in all basinal areas of Zambia, their exploration potential has not been tapped fully. Zambia has an abundance of known mineral deposits and it is the world’s fourth largest producer of copper and holds six percent of the world’s known copper reserves
