Peter Hain

The Right Honourable Peter Hain is DMA’s Strategic Adviser. An MP from 1991 to 2015, was 12 years a UK Government Minister, including successively Secretary of State for Wales, Northern Ireland, Work and Pensions and Leader of the Commons. Previously he was also UK Europe Minister, Africa Minister, Middle East Minister and Energy Minister. He chaired the UN Security Council, and negotiated international treaties curbing nuclear proliferation and banning the conflict-inducing trade in blood diamonds. His childhood was spent in apartheid South Africa, until his parents were forced into exile in Britain1966 where he became a leader of the Anti-Apartheid Movement during the 1970s and 1980. He obtained degrees at Queen Mary College, London, and Sussex University. He has written 20 books including his memoirs Outside In (2012), Ad & Wal: values, duty, sacrifice in apartheid South Africa (2014) and the concise popular biography Mandela (2010). With 50 years in politics Peter has also written many pamphlets and articles, and has appeared widely on radio and television, as well as being an accomplished public speaker.  He is Chairman of the Donald Woods Foundation and Listen Charities, and Visiting Fellow at Swansea University and Visiting Professor at the University of South Wales
